I was provided with supplies from my friends at The Ribbon Retreat, a company I adore and trust, to create this costume. All opinions are 100% my own!
I usually wait until the following Halloween to post our kids’ costumes. Up until this year, I’ve DIY’ed all of them. The boys will have store bought costumes this year {and I will share their cuteness in the coming weeks}, but little sis wanted to share her sweet costume with all of you today.
It may not be the girliest costume idea ever, but mama learned how to make a tutu, so all is okay in the world. This little R2 Tutu bundle is excited to go trick-or-treating in a couple of weeks with her pals Yoda and Darth Vader. To put together this sweet costume, I turned to my friends at The Ribbon Retreat for a few supplies.
Supplies needed:
tulle {white, regal royal, and french blue}
crochet headbands, 1.5″ and 3″ in white
scissors
R2D2 Onesie {found here, on Etsy}
There are a few other shades of tulle pictured, but I ended up sticking with the three listed above for this project. I used a cylinder storage canister to hold the 3″ headband while I tied pieces of tulle around it, creating my tutu. I didn’t measure, but instead cut each piece to about the length of my forearm. To tie the tulle to the headband, I folded the piece in half, threaded the looped end through a section of the headband and pulled the two loose ends through the loop. This created a knot.
I did a layer of white and the darker blue together along the bottom of the tutu and then alternated white, darker blue, and lighter blue above that for the top layer.
Once I had two rows of tulle around the entire headband, I did some trimming, tried it on Sawyer, and ended up trimming some more. To complete her look, I added a few smaller pieces of the tulle to a 1.5″ headband and trimmed those pretty short.
You can add a tutu to just about anything to make it a little cuter!
Stay tuned for her big brother’s costumes next week.
Happy Halloween!

This is the CUTEST costume ever!! I’m due with my first in January, and I already can’t wait until next year’s Halloween so we can get her all dressed up as R2D2!
Thanks so much for sharing your tutorial. 🙂
