I was sent product in exchange for this post from my friends at Oriental Trading & Learn365.
As always, all opinions are 100% my own.
Are your kids as obsessed with using scissors as mine are because they pretty much ask me daily if they can cut {and a lot of times glue} things. I don’t know what it is about using scissors, but they just can’t get enough of it. A few times a week, I usually oblige them, and let them cut & glue some sort of leftover paper we have laying around from a craft project or drawing session, but after seeing all the beautiful {and might I add inexpensive construction paper options available through Learn365}, I got inspired to make a few easy scissor practice sheets for their little hands.
Materials needed:
kids safety scissors | various colors of construction paper | black Sharpie
I used the Pacon Riverside Construction Paper brand available from Learn365. They’re about $1.50 per pack of 50 at the moment and come in a variety of colors. I know we’ll get a ton of use out of the variety of paper we chose in the upcoming school year. Since I started homeschooling, I’ve always turned to Oriental Trading and now Learn365 to purchase our construction paper colors for the school year. In fact, I’ve got a bit left from last school year’s order, and I can honestly say that I don’t notice a bit of difference in the shade of colors. No fading!
To prepare the practice strips, I simply cut 2-3 inch strips of each color and used a black sharpie to make lines for them to practice their scissor skills. My littlest didn’t exactly follow the lines, but she sure had fun {and honestly, she was using very good form, so that’s all that mattered to me}.
As you can see, she acquired quite a pile of pink!
My four year old took his cutting very seriously, and did such a great job of practicing using the lines that I drew. I should also add, he’s a lefty and mommy has yet to buy him left-handed scissors. {Just added them to my Amazon prime cart this morning–poor buddy}. I know he’ll probably have to use right-handed scissors a lot in his life, and will need to adapt, but any way I can help him out, I definitely will! Your scissors are on the way little man!
We spent a good deal of time one morning after breakfast practicing our scissor skills, and they’ve asked for the practice strips several times since we used them two weeks ago. It’s an easy, inexpensive way to get them focused on something other than the iPad for a chunk of time, so I’ll take it!
