I’ve partnered with my friends at Oriental Trading once again, to share some unbelievable products to promote reading for kids. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.
If you’ve got little ones in your life, I hope you’ve read them a Dr. Seuss book or two or more. They are always so fun to read aloud, and can EASILY be one of the first few books your child actually learns to read.

Many of the words in some of Dr. Seuss’s most popular books were actually from what we now call today the Dolch Sight Words lists. These are lists of the most commonly used words for early readers. In fact, Dr. Seuss wrote Green Eggs and Ham on a bet in 1960 with Bennett Cerf, the co-founder of Random House, that he couldn’t write a book with fifty or fewer distinct words. He did it and won $50 {which Cerf actually never delivered on}. Luckily it went on to become one of Dr. Seuss’s, a.k.a Theodore Geisel’s, most popular works.
My kids and I read Dr. Seuss books together often. So much so, I’d feel comfortable in saying that not a week goes by that we don’t enjoy reading at least one Dr. Seuss book together. And just as he intended it to be, Green Eggs and Ham and also The Cat in the Hat are two of the first books my kindergartener has been able to confidently read to me. The look on his face after accomplishing reading an entire book on his own was priceless!
I was so excited to find some new-to-us reading activities to introduce this week during school time. My kindergartener independently was able to do each activity once I showed him what to do once or twice. He loved working on his own and showing me his finished tasks once completed. His favorite, by far, was this set of super cute, self checking opposite words with Dr. Seuss characters on them. He successfully matched and read every word, and even asked to do it all over again once we finished our school work for the day.
My personal favorite activity was this Word Shape Puzzle activity. Printed with fun illustrations, your students are sure to enjoy learning about words and how to spell! Includes one-hundred 8 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ word cards, one-hundred forty 1″ – 1 1/2″ letter cards and a 7″ x 12″ polyester drawstring bag. This activity is FANTASTIC for centers in the classroom, reading groups, and {of course} for homeschoolers too! He loved this activity, and I could see his little mind working hard while trying to sound out each part of the words he needed to build!
He also used these super cute Alphabet Stampers for a few activities I had printed out from various blogs and resources online. This one in particular was focused on the ending sound of each picture.
Perfect for reinforcing letter recognition, spelling practice, and sight words. These 1 1/2″ plastic stampers have assorted ink colors that are super bright and last LONG! Each set comes with one of each letter, all in upper case.
There are LOTS of other amazing reading resources including activities, lessons, rewards, and incentives offered at Oriental Trading. Some are even Dr. Seuss specific, perfect for celebrating his birthday this week!
