I was provided with books from BOB Books, a company that I adore and trust for this post. All opinions are 100% my own!
A few weeks ago, my biggest little guy and I began our homeschooling career. I’ve already learned a few things along the way.
1. It’s preschool. It doesn’t have to be perfect. If all I can manage to do that day is have him help me out with daily tasks and chores, he’s learning!
2. Pinterest is an awesome way to keep my ideas and resources in one spot.
3. BOB Books are my number one resource for teaching him his ABC’s and pre-reading skills!
I’ll admit, I was skeptical at first. After all, he’s barely 3 1/2 years old. But we started out using the very first set BOB books offers, My First Alphabet and My First Pre-Reading Skills, and I have to say, they are AWESOME!!
We’ve gotten through most of the alphabet books already, and I find that going back through them every couple of days or so really helps him to remember what we read before. He easily recognizes each letter on the cover and associates the letters and sounds with the corresponding pictures and words on the pages.
Here’s what you can expect from both sets:
My First Bob Books Alphabet Books helps your preschooler…
Realize that written language represents spoken language
Learn the names of the letters
Realize that letters represent sounds
Learn which letters represent which sound
This set has a total of 12 books, with two letters per book. They introduce your child to both upper and lowercase with an alliterating story, so your child can listen for letter sounds.
Each book also offers an alphabet hint for parents in the inside front cover to help your child focus and listen for the sounds of the book. I especially liked the very last page of each book where it offered a list of the letter words in the book and an additional list of words that describe pictures in the book. We always go over those once we finish reading the book together.
My First Bob Books Pre-Reading Skills introduces these important pre-literacy skills in a story format:
Identifying basic shapes in preparation for letter recognition
Sorting, classifying and symbol identification to build important problem-solving skills
Recognizing simple patterns to create awareness of letter groups and sight words
Sequencing to strengthen the ability to predict how stories flow
This set also contains 12 books with four pre-reading skills covered throughout the set. And just like the Alphabet set, there are literacy games and teaching tips on the inside front cover. It’s perfect for the preschooler learning to read and the parent that needs a little push to get creative with reading too!
With the holidays quickly approaching, any BOB Books set would make a fabulous gift for your little reader! They’ve got lots of options well into the beginning years of school as well.
