What’s a first birthday party without a sweet high chair banner for the birthday boy?! I made a fabric banner for Jackson’s first birthday and knew I wanted to make a special one to mark Henry’s big day as well. In keeping with the bright, primary colors, I used my Cricut Explore™ and some torn fabric to make this banner for him…
Materials needed:
jute twine
mini clothespins
fabric in your party’s theme/colors
canvas pennant flag
Heat ‘n’ Bond
sewing machine
strong glue dots
To start, I followed the package directions and ironed the Heat ‘n’ Bond to the wrong side of the green fabric I’d be using to cut the number one.
Applying the Heat ‘n’ Bond makes the fabric sturdy enough to be cut by the Explore. After selecting the font I liked, I changed the Smart Set Dial to fabric and began the cutting process {which took less than a minute}.
Once the number was cut, I ironed it in place on the canvas pennant and used my sewing machine to put a decorative stitch around the number. You do not have to do this step, I just liked the finished look it gave the number. The Heat ‘n’ Bond should be strong enough that it will stick on it’s own if ironed correctly!
Next, I was ready to assemble the banner itself. To tear the fabric, you simply cut small slits with your fabric scissors at the bottom of your piece of fabric. Once the slits are all cut, begin to tear the fabric {and it will tear in a straight line, trust me}. For a detailed picture, see this post.
I used mini clothespins to position the pennant flag in place and then just tied the torn fabric pieces directly onto the jute twine.
Once the fabric extended to the length of the tray of my high chair, I felt that it was complete. This will obviously vary from high chair to high chair. I used some strong glue dots to secure the banner in place for the party.
