One of my favorite baby shower gifts to give/make are diaper cakes. I think they are awesome because they are made with a baby essential–diapers–and then you can add lots of other cute baby items to it as well to decorate it!
To make a 3-tier diaper cake, you’ll need:
2-3 bags of diapers
clear hair elastics {those teeny tiny ones}
a cardboard cake round
ribbon
flower stems
wooden letter {baby’s initial}
coordinating paint
hot glue/glue gun
small baby gifts
First thing you’ll need to do is roll each diaper individually and secure it with a clear hair elastic. I did it sitting in front of the TV to pass the time. *I’d suggest to the new mama to just cut each elastic when she disassembles the diaper cake.*
Next you’ll want to start creating your cake layers. I used a piece of fold over elastic to help keep the shape of each layer while I worked. Then, once I felt it was filled in enough, I used twine to secure each layer in place. It’s okay to keep the twine tied around each layer as you’ll be covering it with pretty ribbon.
Once each tier is created, I used a flower stem and poked it straight down the middle of the cake to help with stability.
It was then time to start adding the fun stuff to the diaper cake…the ribbon, flowers, gifts, and baby letter.
For this particular diaper cake, I added a baby book by one of our favorite authors, Sandra Boynton, a O-ball toy, some handmade burp cloths {click here to find out how I like to make my burp cloths}, some hot pink ribbon, a few flower stems, and a hand painted letter K.
Before I could add anything to the cake however, I needed to cover the twine around each tier with ribbon. I secured the ribbon with hot glue and created a folded seam that would essentially end up on the back side of the cake.
After the ribbon was in its place, I rolled the burp cloths similarly to how I rolled the diapers and inserted them around the second tier of the cake and placed the baby toy at the top. I attached the letter and the baby book with a small dab of hot glue {it will pop right off the book, I checked} and then added green and pink flowers as well.
It was such a quick and simple baby shower gift, and I absolutely love how it turned out!
What are your favorite baby gifts to give?
