I’m so excited to share today’s craft with all of you. Why? Well,
1. I think it might be one of the cutest things I’ve ever made and
2. It’s my first Valentine’s Day craft of the year {and Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays}.
These cuties are going to be sent to the grandparents this year.
And making them is so easy!
Let’s get started…
You’ll need:
white Sculpey clay
red or pink {or both} paint
**white spray paint**
magnets
hot glue/glue gun
thin tip Sharpie
Now you may notice that I added white spray paint. You may be thinking, the clay is white, why would you need spray paint? Well, I’ve got news. If you accidentally forget that your clay is baking in the oven and it turns a light shade of brown before you remember and take it out, you can let it cool and give it a few thin coats of white spray paint, and it looks good as new!
To start, you’ll want to form some small circular discs with the clay. Make as many discs as you need. I had about half of my block of clay left and managed to make 9 discs total.
Once the discs are formed, take your little’s tiny finger or thumb and press it into the disc. You’ll want to press into each twice, making a tiny heart.
Place them on a clean cookie sheet and bake at 375 for 12-15 minutes. And keep an eye on them!! But like I said, if you do leave them in a tad too long, use the spray paint…totally hides that slight brownish tint.
Once the are completely cool and/or dry from spray painting, you’re ready to make that sweet little thumbprint heart stand out. I used red and pink paint and a thin brush to paint over those tiny prints, and oh, how I love them!
I used Deco Art’s Americana Multi-Surface Satin paints in Pink Cadillac, Lipstick, and Flamingo.
After the tiny heart prints dried for about an hour, I used a fine tip Sharpie marker to write the boys’ names and the year.
Now all that’s left is to hot glue a strong circular magnet to the back of each clay disc and you’ve got an instant Valentine’s Day magnet and keepsake.
Check back later next week to see the cute way I packaged each magnet before we sent them to grandma and grandpa this year!

I can’t wait to try these! Would it also work to bake the discs, paint the child’s thumb and then print the thumb onto the disc? Would it need to be sprayed with a clear coat? I’m wondering if that would let the print be more prominent. Love this idea and can’t wait to give them to the grandparents! In fact, just might have our playgroup make them.
meredith says
That would be a great idea too 🙂 I’d maybe spray a sealer over it once it’s dry or even do a thin layer of Mod Podge!!
Nicole says
Did you end up trying this method? How did it work?
