As a former teacher I’m definitely a sucker for the aisles and aisles of school supplies that most recently have graced our local Walmart. I don’t need them anymore, but sometimes a girl just wants to buy a brand new box of crayons, ya know?! Well, lucky for me this year I had a fantastic excuse to pick up a cart full of school supplies because Champions for Kids and Fiskars partnered together this Fall and asked me to purchase school supplies to donate to a local school or organization in need.
I headed out to my local Walmart to scour the aisles of supplies and picked up some great finds from Fiskars, Elmer’s, and Crayola to donate at my church’s school supply drive this month. After all was said and done, there were hundreds of school supplies donated by our church to students and classrooms in need in our own community.
Since I’m a crafty kinda gal, I also checked out the Crafting Projects featured on Fiskars website and created a super cute eraser stamped tag to say thank you to the teacher that would be receiving the school supplies. Making the tag was VERY easy, especially since I picked up some great Fiskars supplies while I was at Walmart.
To make the tag, I used white cardstock, green and white polka dotted cardstock, scrapbook stickers, green paint, and a pencil. I also used a circle scallop punch and a circle punch made by Fiskars.
I started by punching out the shapes from each paper type. To attach the white circle to the scalloped circle, I used an Elmer’s glue stick.
Once the tags were assembled, I used some scrapbook letter stickers that I had in my craft closet to spell out a couple of messages.
I used a dab of green paint and the eraser end of a good old number two pencil to stamp the tag.
They dried super fast, which was nice!
To put together my school supply donations, I punched a hole in each tag and tied them to a mason jar with some jute twine.
I then added the pencil jar to the center of a big bin full of awesome school supplies, ready for a teacher in need!
As a former teacher myself, I would have LOVED to have gotten a nice basket of new supplies like this for my classroom. Lots of times students can’t afford needed supplies and teachers just don’t have the extra money needed to purchase what every student needs. It’s so important that kids of all walks of life have the opportunity to have access to school supplies necessary for not only their academic work, but also for a chance at expressing their creativity.
How can you help out kids in need in your community? I’d love to hear your ideas!
