Not many people know this about me because I try not to let it define my life or put limits on the activities that I enjoy with friends and family, but I’ve been living with rheumatoid arthritis since I was about twelve years old. It became a noticeable problem in my last year of dance classes. Up until I was twelve, I took a variety of classes, competed at national dance competitions, and even had the opportunity to dance in the opening act of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade {I sadly had to turn down that offer as my pain at that point was pretty much unbearable}.
That last year of dance was very rough for me both physically and mentally. I had to make a decision to quit something that had been a part of me for so long, or risk some long term health issues if I decided to continue. Ultimately, I made the decision that walking without feeling like my legs were going to snap in half was a better decision for my body than continuing my dance career. I had been diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis but luckily through diet and exercise, I have been able to avoid having to take any kind of medication since that day.
Since being diagnosed, I’ve been amazed at the lack of information I’ve been able to find on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and living a normal life with rheumatoid arthritis. I recently discovered Lifescript.com and was pleased to find that they had an abundance of resources on rheumatoid arthritis. I really enjoyed the fact that they walk you through the stages of RA from being diagnosed, to being treated, and ultimately living with the disease.

My mother-in-law has RA too. It’s so tough; one day she feels okay and the next it can be debilitating. 🙁 So sorry you have to deal with it, but I’m so glad you found such a great resource.

I never would have guessed this of you, Meredith! How awesome that you haven’t had to take medication- that is an accomplishment! My sister has rhuematism and boy, it sure gets her down sometimes! I think even those of us close to her don’t realize how much it affects every bit of her life! I’m excited to share this with her 🙂

my BFF has RA. It’s so hard to watch her sometimes suffer, terribly! She can’t drive, her mom has to help her all the time. I’m sending her the link to this post. Best of luck to you!!!

That sounds like a pretty bad case of it! I’m really lucky that it hasn’t progressed to be that bad yet. Luckily it’s gotten a lot better after being pregnant twice too. Definitely send your friend the link to Lifescript! She’ll love it and all their resources!
